Where Substack wins

Time to first post. You can be publishing five minutes from now, for free, with payments handled. No plan to pick, nothing to configure.

Discovery. Substack's network, recommendations, and Notes send real readers to new writers. If you're starting from zero audience, this is the strongest cold-start engine in the space.

Simplicity as a feature. No automations, no funnels, no dashboard sprawl. For writers who want to write, less genuinely is more.

Where beehiiv wins

The economics at scale. Substack takes 10% of paid subscription revenue, forever. beehiiv charges a flat monthly fee and takes 0%. At $1,000/month in paid subs, Substack's cut is already ~$100/month — more than beehiiv's whole bill. The crossover comes earlier than most writers expect.

Sponsorship money. beehiiv has a built-in ad network and the tooling sponsors expect — segmented audiences, click reporting, dedicated sends. On Substack, sponsorships are a DIY spreadsheet exercise.

Growth you control. A referral program, paid recommendations (Boosts), pop-ups, and A/B testing. Substack grows you through its network; beehiiv hands you the machinery to grow yourself.

The honest caveats

beehiiv's free tier is generous but its paid plans are a real monthly cost before revenue shows up — verify current pricing on their site. And Substack's network effect is real: some writers earn discovery there that no growth tooling replaces. That's why our quiz still recommends Substack for a chunk of people, even though Substack doesn't pay us anything.
